I am a senior in college. When I entered my freshman year, I had all sorts of lofty dreams and goals –I wanted to be an engineer for starters– and time is running out for me to complete me so-called “college bucket-list”.
Last night I got to check off another box “be published by a professional publication”.
I’ve always had a love for journalism. I started off in broadcast television when I was in third grade, taking weekend workshops on how to use Photoshop (CS), Final Cut Pro (and all of the add on programs like Lightwave and Soundtrack), Premier, After Effects, you name it. I wanted to be a reporter.
That dream continued on through high school (my hometown has a really great broadcast media focus and hosts annual awards for all of the local schools) when I ultimately decided that I wasn’t sure if I wanted to stay in journalism. Engineering seemed to be a stable career, and I had had family in journalism careers that had been downsized at the local paper. Unfortunately, engineering wasn’t meant to be either.
Despite never formally returning to my journalism roots and declaring journalism as a second major, I have stayed rather involved. For the past 3.5 years, I have served as an assistant video coordinator for Mercer football. I have also had photos published in The Dulcimer (our literary/arts magazine), The Cluster (our campus paper) and most recently The Telegraph.
I’m not sure how journalism will incorporate into my life after college. Maybe I will only ever be a blogger, but that’s not the end of the world. Regardless of the medium; however, I think I will continue to tell stories.
